With the increasing popularity of electric and plug in hybrid vehicles, there is a rise in demand for independent garages to provide electric car servicing. We know that there are numerous electric cars buzzing around the Exeter area that currently have very limited choices when it comes to servicing and repair.
Here at MBS, we want to ensure that we are at the forefront of new technology, so our garage technicians are currently undergoing training in order to obtain the IMI accredited qualifications needed to service and repair electric and plug in hybrid electric vehicles.
Servicing an electric car is not quite the same as servicing any other vehicle. It requires specific expertise on high voltage systems, hybrid engines, electrical motors, power inverter systems, energy/hardware systems, electric control propulsion sensing systems, battery regeneration braking systems and other specific elements.
However, servicing a pure electric car or van is actually simpler than servicing conventional petrol or diesel cars. This is because they have fewer moving parts so fewer things that can go wrong and need replacing. An electric vehicle has only three main parts: the electric motor, on-board charger and inverter. For this reason, they cost less to service and maintain, meaning your vehicle may cause you less hassle overall.
When you bring your electric vehicle in for a service, we will perform the usual checks on the standard service items and legal requirements of a roadworthy car, such as wear on the braking system, your headlights and tyre condition to name a few. In addition, we will also inspect and replace electric-specific elements, such as:
• Charging cable – we will check that cable is present and visually check its condition
• High-voltage battery – we will check the charge level and recharge it if necessary
• High-voltage components and high-voltage cables – we will inspect these for damage and correct routing and securing of lines
For pure electric cars, oil changes that are a thing of the past!
Keep your eyes peeled, we should be displaying our ‘fully qualified’ plaque and ready to open our doors to electric vehicles as we enter March this year. We look forward to offering this additional service to our customers and can’t wait to hear about your experiences of your green motoring so far!
